Our Purpose

  • Approximately 30 years ago family members invited other families, service providers, educators and anyone interested in the well-being of children with social, emotional, behavioral, developmental, and learning challenges to begin meeting on a monthly basis.

  • The meetings were a place where families could seek education and likewise provide education to the public, service providers, and educators about children living with these differences.

  • The meetings represented families, family support providers, service providing agencies, and educators in 19 counties in Western New York.

  • The group became known as the Western New York Family Support Coalition.

About us

our history

We are a grass roots, parent run organization committed to ensuring that families of children with behavioral, social, emotional, developmental and learning challenges have access to needed information, support and services within Western New York.  We do this by working to strengthen family support services, promote awareness of children’s mental health issues, and foster equal partnerships between parents/caretakers and children’s service providers of all types

  • In 2001 the Coalition decided to formalize its mission and purpose by achieving 501 (C) 3 status.  With funding from the New York State Office of Mental Health and under the umbrella of  the Monroe County Department of Mental Health the Coalition formed a Board of Directors, hired an attorney and applied for non-profit status.

  • On September 15, 2001 the Children’s Mental Health Coalition of Western New York, Inc. opened its doors as a non-profit dedicated to children.

  • Shortly after, the Children’s Mental Health Coalition of Western New York became a Chapter of Families Together in New York State.

  • As a chapter of Families Together, the Children’s Mental Health Coalition is a part of a large and influential network of caring families working towards providing support, collective action, partnership, and strength in achieving the care necessary for our children and families.
